Biblography of George Bernard Shaw Irish Playwrite 1856 to 1950

Born 26th July 1856 - Dublin Ireland to George Carr Shaw & Lucinda Elizabeth Gurly

1871- Shaw entered Land Agency office as aclerk, in the employement of Mr Charles Uniacke Townshend.

1876 - Parents split up & Shaw 7 his mother & sister Lucy move to London.

1878 - Shaw write's five novels.

1879 - Employed in London by City firm to exploit edison's telephone, his "last sin against nature" GBS.

1879 - Joined Zeteticle Debating Society.

1884 - Joined fabian Society & elected to Executive.

1885 - Appointed through agency of Willaim Archer to the reveiwing staff of the Pall Mall Gazette.

1886 - 87 Art critic to the 'World' under Edmund Yates.

1888 - Lectured to the Economic section of the British Association
at Bath - UK.

1888-90 - Shaw also became a Music critic for the 'Star' under the pen name of 'Corno di Bassetto'. (after the Bassoon instrument)

1890-94 - Music critic to the 'World' in succession to Louis Engel.

1892 - His first play, Widoer's Houses, is performed in London.

1894 - First performance of Arms & The Man in London & New York.

1895-98 - Dramatic critic to the Saturday Review.

1897 - Vestryman & Borough Councillor, St Pancras.

1898 - Married Charlotte Payne-Townshend at a London registry office & moved to her flat in Adelphi Terrace. Publishes seven plays.

1899 - First performances of You Never can Tell, John Bull's Other Island.

1904 - Progressive candidate L.C.C, St Pancras; defeated. First
performances of : The Philanderer, Man & Superman, & major Barbara.

1906 - He & Charlotte move to Shaw's Corner in Ayot. First performance of The Doctor's Dilema. Sat for Bronze Bust made by Rodin (Charlotte's fave bronze of her husband)

1909 - Gave evidence before Select Committee on licensing of plays.

1911 - Elected Academic Committee, Royal Society of Literature.

1913 - First performances of Androcles & The Lion, Great catherine, (in Vienna), Pygmalion, prior to its sensational success in London the following year.

1923 - Wrote Saint Joan. First performed in New York in 1924 & in London later in the same year.

1926 - Received Nobel Price for Literature. Shaw made over the prize money to encourage intercourse & understanding in literature & art, between Sweden & the British Isles through a society known as the 'Anglo-Swedish Literary Foundation. Shaw attends his Seventieth birthday dinner.

1929 - Shaw Festival at Malvern opened with The Apple Cart.

1931 - Visited Russia & received by Stalin.

1932 - sals to New York on the Empress o Britain for a Lecture.

1938 - Receives an 'Oscar' for best film of the year for Pygmalion.

1943 - Charlotte Shaw died.

1944 - Gives his home to the National Trust.

1946 - 90th Birthday & gives a television braodcast. Receives Freedoms of City of Dublin & Borough of St Pancras.

1950 - George Bernard Shaw died on 2nd November All Souls day & he & his wife's ashes are mixed together & spread around the garden, especially around the St Joan statue
